We caught up with Jacobo Ocampo Valencia, Junior Planner, as he reflects on his time on the Edelman Open scheme.

Why did you join the Edelman Open scheme?

I joined the Open Scheme because it was the perfect opportunity to explore and find out what path I wanted to follow within the industry without feeling like I was wasting my time.

What does a typical day in your role look like?

Something that I really like about working in planning is that no two days are the same. We work on different projects for different brands, so it is very difficult to describe a typical day in this role.

What’s been your favourite project/campaign to work on?

Some brands are in general very fun to work on, for example almost every single IKEA project is always very interesting as it allows you to get deep into different societal problems and find a role for the brand that feels genuine.

What advice would you give to others applying to the Edelman Open scheme?

I would advise them to be themselves. This industry needs people from different backgrounds and walks of life, and we will only find those people if they make the things that make them ‘different’ stand out.

How do you see your career path developing?

I would like to continue developing as a creative strategist and hopefully soon jump to the next level and become a creative planner.

Jacobo joined the Edelman Open scheme in 2019.

Applications for Edelman Open 2022 are now closed.
