From 1993 to 2000 she directed global communications programmes for Merck & Co Inc.’s cardiovascular franchise (Zocor, Mevacor, Cozaar, Renitec and Aggrastat) which included the international launch of the results of the landmark Scandinavian Simvastatin Survival Study, which revolutionized prescribing patterns for cholesterol-lowering agents literally overnight. During this period, Carolyn also directed communications for Merck’s HIV product portfolio and launched new classes of therapy which began the evolution of HIV from a death sentence to a chronic disease.
Carolyn was previously Associate Director at Hill & Knowlton, where she was part of the team that launched the first nicotine patch in the UK and directed the global launch programmes of many other blockbuster products including Seroxat/Paxil and Clarityne. Carolyn was a leader of the team that supported Wellcome and Burroughs-Wellcome’s activities in HIV, including managing the outcome of controversial clinical trials of AZT and devising the first global programme of care, education and community support developed by any pharmaceutical company in the field.
At Edelman, Carolyn has particular responsibility for the development of global strategy, providing high level consultancy to senior clients and perfecting the design and execution of integrated global communications marketing campaigns, for clients who operate in multiple markets and regions around the world.
