David Sugden, Edelman UK’s Head of Litigation & Legal Affairs, recently addressed the World Litigation Forum in London, making the case that privacy is a privilege of the past and, consequently, legal issues have never been more influenced by factors outside the court room.

The World Litigation Forum was held at the Law Society of England & Wales on 8 and 9 June. The annual event, organized by International Excellence Forum (IExForum), brings together legal counsels and practitioners from around the world to discuss latest legal trends and debate the present challenges to the legal market and industry.  Over 30 legal professionals – comprising general counsels, private practice lawyers, risk & compliance officers and governance executives – from over 15 different jurisdictions spoke over the two day conference, convened in central London.

David’s proposition to the conference was that in today’s globalized and digitalized world, disputes are fought across multiple battlefields and reputations have never been determined less by underlying legal positions. For the most complete protection, David added, clients are now asking their advisors to think like lawyers but act like communicators.

David leads Edelman’s Litigation & Legal Affairs UK team which, as part of Edelman’s wider network of 65 offices of communications counsellors around the world, manages clients’ reputations borne out of legal issues both played out in the courtroom and in private non-litigious matters.
